During an early stage of gum disease there will be red, swollen and bleeding when in contact with the toothbrush. Although it may not be painful at first so people experiencing this would tend to delay treatment. As this progress, gingivitis or worst periodontitis can cause a more serious condition. Gum disease occurs when bacteria irritate the gums making them tender, inflamed and almost bleeding. Deposited plaque hardens and form into tartar in the gum line making them irritated.

Although in some instances puberty, pregnancy, smoking and certain medications can also contribute to the loosening of teeth.
